Speech and Language Therapy (SaLT)

The role of our Speech and Language Therapy (SaLT) department is to support the speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) of all students, therefore helping to enable them to fulfil their academic and personal potential.  The team provide direct support to those students with the most significant language and communication needs via 1:1 sessions, in-class support, or by creating groups providing targeted intervention to address specific EHCP outcomes.  The team also assists with the development of students’ social skills by providing direct and indirect support in Self Science lessons.

Another of their key roles is to develop skills and knowledge amongst staff in working with students with SLCN.  They aim to achieve this through information sharing, by providing ongoing advice and support, and by delivering bespoke training to all staff.  The SaLT team works closely with different departments within the school to embed language and communication strategies into the curriculum and provides a diverse range of school wide visual resources and individual resources as requested.  These include room signs and timetables, and resources to promote vocabulary (including emotional vocabulary), task engagement, positive behaviour, narrative skills, and social/friendship skills.  Working in this way, the SaLT team aims to enable staff to confidently support and develop students’ language and communication skills, encouraging the students to be successful, confident communicatorsand Language Therapy (SaLT).
