He’s our winner

Our very own trustee, Mr Leigh Harris has just returned from the Triathalon World Championships, representing Great Britain. He has raised over £2,500 in the process. We would like to congratulate Leigh on such an amazing achievement. The following is his review of the sprint race.

‘Mexico was fantastic and an amazing experience to race for my country against the rest of the world. The conditions were tough on race day with the ground temperature reaching 38 degrees C and the humidity over 80%.

I had a good swim in crystal clear waters followed by a fast bike, both Personal Bests, I managed to break away from the pack at the end of the bike and came into transition 2 on my own in 37 position overall and 8th Brit I felt strong and then……. the run happened!

On the run I really began to struggle with the heat and despite poring iced water over myself at every aid station I just couldn’t manage anything faster than a shuffle. It became a case of just finishing rather than being competitive and I lost 26 place on the run to finish 63rd overall and 12 Brit. Disappointedly I recorded my slowest ever 5k run time!

Apart from the Mexicans everyone struggled and some were even hospitalized so on reflection I was pleased to have finished.

The ice bath at the end, for once, was very welcome.’
